The ROSL branch in Western Australia has as its objectives, to be fully aligned with the overall objectives of the Royal Over-Seas League, namely:
- Encouraging international friendship and understanding
- Supporting the Commonwealth through social, arts, and welfare activities
The ROSL WA Branch helps to achieve the above by its strong commitment to supporting the arts, and student musicians in Western Australia.
ROSL WA has established prizes, funded by donations from its members, for students at the University of Western Australia's (UWA) Conservatorium of Music, that are awarded by recital competitions. Also, annually, a concert event is held at UWA for finalists of the prestigious ROSL ARTS London Travel Award. The winner of the award travels to London and other parts of the UK, and also participates in various arts festivals and other events.
Additionally, throughout the year, there are performances by our ROSL WA Visiting Artists-in Residence, who deliver master classes to UWA students.
ROSL WA has also now established an exciting new relationship with the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). Many well-known actors, dancers, musicians, and music theatre stars including Hugh Jackman, Frances O'Connor, Marcus Graham, Lucy Durack, Rachelle Durkin, Emma Matthews, Jamie Oehlers, and Eddie Perfect, are all former alumni of WAAPA. ROSL WA is funding the following prizes and scholarships by donations from members, as follows:
- Two Entrance Scholarships in Classical Music and one in Jazz Music
- Music Prizes for: Chamber Music, Composition, Recital of Bach’s Music, Improvisation, Early Keyboard and an Art Song Prize.
ROSL WA is reaching out to new members of all ages, especially those interested in supporting the Commonwealth through social, arts, and welfare activities, particularly classical music, and to people who travel to London, who can enjoy the benefits of our clubhouse there, Over-Seas House in Park Place, just off St James in Mayfair.
Currently, we also have reciprocal arrangements for members to stay at The Royal Scots Club at Abercromby Place, in Edinburgh’s Georgian ‘New Town’, as well as at many other clubs around the world.
