Next Wednesday the shortlisted writers from the Caine Prize for African Writing will be here at ROSL, and we will have the chance to hear extracts from their shortlisted stories. The evening will be chaired by Maggie Orford, a South African journalist, and author. Following the event there will be a chance to meet the authors and talk about their work over a complimentary glass of wine. 

The Caine Prize will also be presenting the authors at other venues around London, including SOAS, at the University of London, and Willesden Library.

This year ROSL member’s also have a chance to vote for their favourite story from the shortlist, and time is running out to cast your vote. You can cast your vote at the bottom of the page. A reminder of the stories can be found below:

But this isn’t all that ROSL ARTS has to offer! On Tuesday 10 July Jennifer Witton, the inaugural recipient of the Roderick Lakin award, will be performing a concert entitled ‘Shakespeare: Words and Tone’. Jennifer will be joined by performers from the Royal Shakespeare Company and Glyndebourne Opera perform the first in a series of concerts using Shakespeare's text to explore the colourful world we live in. 'Like Madness is the Glory of Life' uses songs and texts from plays such as Macbeth, The Tempest, As you like it and Shakespeare's sonnets to explore the multi-faceted concept of what we call madness and the world in which we define it.

The songs performed will include English song composers including Finzi, Dowland, Gurney, and Korngold but also those words set in other languages including some Schubert and Chausson.
