Over the course of the week our event coordinator has stealthily been updating the event section of the website, so let’s take a look at what you could be getting up to this summer with us here at the Royal Over-Seas League.
The first date for your diary is our Summer Ball on Saturday 16 June when the clubhouse will become Emily Brontë’s famous Wuthering Heights to celebrate her 200th birthday. Actors from Past Pleasures, who were with us for the Waterloo Ball back in 2015, will be providing an immersive experience for guests as they recreate the Georgian period and this beloved classic. On hand throughout the night will also be the UK’s most famous silhouette artist, Charles Burns, who has cut portraits of HM the Queen and other members of the Royal family. Charles will be capturing your brooding profiles for you to take home as a memento of the evening. After a three-course meal, there will then be a chance to try your hand at Georgian dancing in our Princess Alexandra Hall with the Fortuna Trio.
Throughout the summer months we’ll be taking advantage of the good weather with some walking tours. In July, we’ll be taking a turn around Buckingham Palace’s State 
Rooms and Garden (27 July), which includes a chance to see the special display to mark The Prince of Wales’ 70th birthday. Then, in August, Dr Matthew Green will be returning after the success of the Medieval Wine tour last year with his latest concoction: the history of London in five drinks (14 August).
September marks the return of several club favourites including Shakespeare in the Garden (7 September) and our next instalment of the Evelyn Wrench Lecture Series (21 September). This year the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust actors will be giving us their rendition of Romeo and Juliet, and turning our very own terrace into one of the most famous balconies in theatre. On a very different tone, our EWLS lecture will focus on terrorism in the UK, from its strengths in combating threats such as our intelligence agencies and the communication of intelligence, to its weaknesses and future challenges with new technology.
For our Younger Members, the committee are working tirelessly to provide a regular calendar of events for under 35s to get together and socialise. At the beginning of August, Let’s Pig Out (2 August) with our BBQ and Pimms evening in the garden, and at the end of September ROSL will be hosting one of Inter-Club’s annual balls – the perfect chance to put those glad rags on and meet other young members from across clubland. The Committee are also planning a few excursions throughout the summer period so keep your eyes peeled on the website and Facebook group for when those are confirmed.
And that’s not even mentioning the Gold Medal Final (4 June) and ROSL ARTS calendar of events also on offer to members.
But if that’s not enough for you, then take a look at our WWI commemoration series of events. From our Lunch & Learn: Fundraising our way to victory (3 November), to our Zeppelins Over London (4 November) walking tour, our very own Memorial Service (8 November) and a series of concerts themed around memory, there are lots of ways for you to join us in remembering those who died during The Great War.
