With the deadline for entries to our Annual Music Competition 2018 fast approaching we take a look at 2017’s winners and what they have been up to since our Gold Medal Final in Cadogan Hall.
James Buckle, bass trombone, was the first ever brass-playing Gold Medal winner of our competition in its 65 year history, and also the first recipient of the Manu Bhungara Scholarship. James graduated from the Royal Academy of music and has since been performing with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the BBC Concert Orchestra and the English National Opera. With such an exciting career ahead of him we can’t wait to see what he’ll do next!
Mathilde Milwidsky was our String Section winner. Mathilde was completing her studies at the Royal Academy of Music when she won our String Section, and has recently begun her Masters degree at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München. Since winning the award she has become a St John’s Smith Square Artist. Some of our members will recognise Mathilde from her recent performance in November at our Chairman’s Dinner where she performed Grieg and Kreisler.
Nick Mogg, our Vocal Section winner, is currently studying on the Opera Course at the Royal Academy of Music. Since winning the award Nick has performed the title role in the Royal Academy Opera production of Don Giovanni at the Hackney Round Chapel. He also performed in our Edinburgh clubhouse as part of our 2017 Fringe series ‘Music & More’ and more recently at our Carol Service at St George’s Hanover Square, earlier this month.
Pianist Dominic Degavino was our Keyboard Section Winner and whilst competing in the AMC, he was also completing his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music. He has since moved down to London to study for his Masters degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Over the summer Dominic also joined us in Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival as well as more recently performing in one of our local churches St James’s Piccadilly at the beginning of December.
If you want to see the future winners of our competition, the Section Finals begin on Tuesday 13th February and run through to Thursday 22nd March 2018. Tickets can be booked here.
