A long-time supporter of ROSL, the countess followed in her father's footsteps, Lord Mountbatten, by becoming a vice-president and opening extensions to the Westminster wing in 1987 and 2004. She was injured on the day of Lord Mountbatten's death, ROSL President from 1942-1959 and Grand President until 1979, when an IRA bomb exploded aboard their boat off Co Sligo, Ireland.
The explosion killed her father, her son Nicholas, a local boy named Paul Maxwell and Dowager Lady Brabourne, who we recently featured on the ROSL website. Countess Mountbatten, her husband Lord Brabourne and their son Timothy survived, but she was badly injured and needed hundreds of stitches to repair her face.
Following the incident, she continued to support ROSL and other 50 other charities for the rest of her life, dying peacefully surrounded by her children on Tuesday, at her home in Mersham, Kent.
