The Royal Over-Seas League is pleased to announce its second iteration of the ROSL Composition Award for 2022, in association with the London Sinfonietta and Birdsong.

After the success of the competition in 2020, ROSL ARTS continues to build on their long history of commissioning and programming contemporary work and invites emerging composers and music creators to apply for one of six places to workshop a short original work with London Sinfonietta.

ROSL is also committed to unlocking the musical potential of schoolchildren, and alongside the main award will run a series of composition workshop days in secondary schools in collaboration with London Sinfonietta Participation and Learning.

Free to enter, advanced emerging composers and music creators aged 18-35 and citizens of UK and Commonwealth are invited to apply for one of six places to workshop a short original work with London Sinfonietta, following which one composer will be selected to win the award, and a £3,000 commission to compose a 12-15 minute chamber work for six players and conductor, to be premiered by London Sinfonietta.

The composition award panel for 2022 includes celebrated composers, Raymond Yiu, Joseph Davies and Yshani Perinparayagam. New for this year, ROSL has partnered with Birdsong Music Publishing (part of HarrisonParrott) to offer each selected composer mentoring with either Charlotte Bray or Freya Waley-Cohen.

ROSL’s Artistic Director Geoff Parkin said “supporting the creation of new music is a fundamental part of ROSL’s programme and I am pleased we are able to run this award again, following on from the success of the first iteration, where composer Michael Small’s specially commissioned work For Years Now was premiered by London Sinfonietta in 2021… .”

Submissions are now open.
The deadline for first round applications is Tuesday 21st June at 5pm.
