Following the horrific shootings last week in Christchurch, New Zealanders in London will be coming together this evening in Trafalgar Square to hold a vigil from 6pm.
It will be an occasion to grieve together, express sympathy and solidarity, reject extremism and confirm the tolerance and respect for others that characterises New Zealand. Those who died on Friday were mostly not born there, but had made their homes there and forged new lives. They had embraced the country. We know that New Zealand will continue to embrace them and affirm its determination to remain an open and welcoming society.
The vigil will take the form of Maori welcome, short speeches from inter-faith representatives, recognition of each of the victims, a silent moment of reflection, Maori waiata (song). Please come along to show your support.
