Long-time Fringe concert-goer Douglas Paton, recently spent the weekend at ROSL's London Clubhouse with his wife Jenny, having won a free weekend stay by entering a competition that ROSL runs every year at the Edinburgh Fringe. Read what he thought of his first trip to ROSL HQ.

You may be aware that ROSL holds two weeks of concerts in Edinburgh as part of the Festival Fringe. This enables us “up north” to hear ROSL Annual Music Competition winners and past winners, at the beginning of these highly talented players’ careers. You may be less aware that there is a prize draw to win a weekend for two at the London Clubhouse.

After many years of entering I was delighted to be told I had won this year! The reservations staff were most efficient and helped us select a suitable weekend and gave my wife, Jenny and I, a room on the top floor with a wonderful panoramic view of the city. The room was very comfortable and well furnished. We thought the building was magnificent, with an amazing location, handy for Green Park Tube station and between the Ritz and Fortnum and Mason.

On arrival, we were met by the porter staff who were most helpful all weekend. The reception staff were most efficient and charming. We had dinner on the Saturday night, and again the Restaurant staff could not have been more helpful and attentive.

Apart from exploring the city on our own, we had the opportunity to spend Sunday with my brother in-law and his wife, who live in Wimbledon.

Before we left on the Monday morning we were able to meet Geoff Parkin, Director of Arts, to thank him for the opportunity to stay in the clubhouse. I will certainly encourage other committee members at Kirkcaldy Music Society to attend more of the Edinburgh concerts. It gives us ideas of artists to book in the future for our concerts. Now I have to decide whether to be greedy and continue to enter the prize draw in the future, or rest on my laurels. Many thanks again to all.
