Last week ROSL ARTS ventured up to Manchester to support our 2018 Visual Art Scholars as they presented work at Manchester Contemporary Art Fair from 12 – 14 of October. This was the tenth year of the fair in Manchester and we were very excited to have been involved for the first time with Buhle Wonder Mbambo, Joey Chin and The Art House in Wakefield.

Located in the middle of the busy city the large hall of Manchester Central was transformed with temporary walls, on which art from around the world was hung for the weekend. The opening event on Friday night was lively with drinks flowing and a lot of interesting conversation around the works on display. Buhle Wonder Mbambo and Joey Chin each presented three works in the booth and they were happy to share their practices and engage with all the visitors.

Buhle’s paintings are bold and eye-catching so they certainly drew people into the space, while Joey’s more intricate displays of found books, objects and created text on Perspex develop a narrative that requires the viewer to look a little closer. The juxtaposition of these two artists who both examine stories and histories but in very different ways was interesting in such a small space.

The visitors took away information about the Artists and the ROSL International Residency, while we also shared news of our upcoming ROSL International Residency celebration event in Wakefield.
