Finally! The 2020 Annual Music Competition has made a triumphant return to ROSL, following a hiatus of more than six months. Last night, the Mixed Ensembles Section Final took place in a socially-distanced Princess Alexandra Hall, where trombone quartet Slide Action took home not one, but two prizes.
Taking to the stage were wind quintet Pacific Winds; saxophone, violin and piano ensemble The Kavinsky Trio; Tango group The Nuevo Tango Ensemble; as well as Trombone Quartet Slide Action.
In the end, the judging panel, made up of Gavin Henderson CBE, Geoff Parkin, Sarah Field and Huw Wiggin chose Slide Action as the winners of the £10,000 Mixed Ensembles Prize as well as the Philip Jones Prize for an Outstanding Brass Ensemble, thanks to their exceptional blend and musicianship.
Formed in 2018, Slide Action won first prize in the International Trombone Association Quartet competition held at the 2019 International Trombone Festival, held at Ball State University, Indiana, USA. The members are all professional freelance trombonists; working with orchestras, bands and shows all across the UK and Europe.
Watch out for the next stage of the AMC on 13 October, when the Overseas Prize will take place. Book here.
