Can we all stop laughing at Trump, please? This is no longer a joke

Last night the Princess Alexandra Hall was heaving with members and guests as they eagerly awaited the next instalment of the Evelyn Wrench Lecture Series, focusing on the Post-Truth presidency of Donald Trump.

Evelyn Wrench Lecture Series: Is the UK Prepared for Terrorism?

After last year brought an end to the UK’s status as one of the most prominent European countries to be unafflicted by Islamist terrorism in the age of ISIS, first on Westminster Bridge, then Manchester Arena and finally London Bridge, comes the latest instalment of the Royal Over-Seas League’s Evelyn Wrench Lecture Series, on Friday 21 September at Over-Seas House.

Is the UK Prepared for Terrorism? The Verdict

After much anticipation, last Friday night members joined us for the next instalment of our Evelyn Wrench Lecture Series, which would focus on the threat of terrorism. We were joined by panellists Commissioner Ian Dyson of the City of London Police, Dr Paul Martin OBE, a Senior Associate Fellow at RUSI, and Dr Tim Wilson, Director at the Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence at the University of St Andrews. The evening was chaired by ROSL member, Professor Eve Mitleton-Kelly.

Overcoming Barriers to Leadership

When Sir Evelyn Wrench founded the Royal Over-Seas League in 1910, he took a bold step amongst London clubs in admitting female members from the outset. Even today, several of London's oldest clubs only allow male members. This small nod he made to equality has been joined in the century that followed by huge advances in equality in wider society, not only in terms of gender, but also race, religion, sexuality, disability and age, among others. But that doesn't mean equality for all is a reality today; particularly in the workplace.

The Post-truth Presidency

With President Trump's latest pronouncement that he will take the US out of the Paris climate agreement, world leaders and environmentalists have been left reeling at yet another example of Trump's unorthodox, controversial and oft-combative leadership style. The latest instalment of our Evelyn Wrench lecture series aims to unravel the tangled web of half-truths, hearsay and mendacity that has come from both sides of the political spectrum during his presidency.

The Relevance of the Commonwealth in the 21st Century

The latest instalment in our Evelyn Wrench Lecture Series returns on 25 November, with Her Excellency Ms Yamina Karitanyi, High Commissioner for Rwanda to the United Kingdom, joining us to discuss Rwanda as a modern Commonwealth nation, the challenges of reconciliation after conflict and the opportunities presented by being the host of CHOGM 2020.
