FROM SILENCE INTO SONG

Soundworlds from nature and humanity come together in a celebration of resilience and hope

Royal Over-Seas League is proud to partner with the Shout at Cancer choir, Philip Clemo & Christian Drew for this very special concert

This special concert is the exciting culmination of a hugely inspirational project which began with the recording of the inner dialogues of trees that survived the atomic bombs of Hiroshima & Nagasaki. Over 200 trees survived, including a Weeping Willow less than 400m from the Hiroshima blast hypocentre. Many are still alive and continue to be a symbol of overcoming adversity. Film-maker, composer & sound-designer Philip Clemo and team connected specialist microphones and highly-sensitive sensors to survivor trees on the 6th & 9th of August, 2020, exactly 75 years after the 1945 bombings.

This project ultimately asks what we can learn from the extraordinary resilience and symbiotic networks of the natural world, and how we might be able to integrate that learning into the functioning of our own societies. This concert will feature performances from the choir alongside sound recordings from the trees with a new work from Christian Drew (ROSL Composition Award Finalist 2022).

The choir is joined by London-based composer and performer Christian Drew. Christian was a finalist in the 2022 ROSL Composition Award and makes music for concerts, installation, dance and film using acoustic instruments, electronics and recordings. His music ranges from works that draw on baroque, medieval, shoegaze, noise, ambient and folk music, to loose and flexible pieces that use open scoring to invite many possible outcomes.

The concert will be followed by an interdisciplinary panel and Q&A.
