The moving figure, rhythm and energy are central to Sally McKay’s practice, focusing on live performance, principally dance as her stimulus, she captures fleeting moments of movement through drawing figures in real time during rehearsals. The sketches are the starting point in her Printmaking practice.

Rather than use a hard or soft ground to create the etchings, Sally favors the spontaneity and alchemy of directly painting onto the plate using sugar lift, sometimes with aquatint.

Sally holds an MA Fine Art, from City & Guilds of London Art School, she is a Goldsmiths alumni with an honours degree in Fine Art & Contemporary Dance and a post graduate diploma in Printmaking. Joining the Greenwich Printmakers in 2014 with membership of the Printmakers Council, her studio is at Thames-Side Studios, Woolwich. Her artists’ practice combines with teaching and Art Therapy.

"There are times we all need to Escape The City, to enjoy the lush vibrant colours of nature and feel the sea breeze, this year for many that can only be in the imagination, maybe this etching will trigger some good memories.
Hothouse was made after drawing in the exquisite Barbican Conservatory, a celebration of green fauna in the heart of London. Many have found solace and gained courage through spending time growing plants and vegetables whether it’s on the windowsill or in the garden, during these uncertain times. This etching, although made towards the close of 2019, has been the kernel of a new body of work with the focus on nature and natural forms now that I am unable to draw dance in rehearsal studios." - Sally McKay
