BRABOURNE ROOM
Artist Focus | Olly Fathers
3 May - 30 October 2022
ROSL ARTS welcomes Olly Fathers, the latest contemporary British artist to display a series of recent works in the Brabourne Room as a part of our Artist Focus programme. He is a multi-media artist working in a variety materials from painting and sculpture to large-scale murals and collage.
Over the past few years Fathers has been making artwork with a wide selection of wood veneers using traditional marquetry techniques. His work explores the visual language between simple form and material, working shapes into playful harmonies to create a tranquil balance. Due to the nature of the marquetry making process there is an excess number of veneer offcuts created. Rather than discard these, each form is embraced and arranged into new compositions that celebrate their own recycled beauty.
Series of offcuts 2 (2022), which is on display in the Brabourne Room, is an exploration of a single collection of wood veneer offcuts, arranged in multiple compositions. Each work is cut by hand and in doing so, a new set of offcuts are created and repurposed. This series celebrates the process of constant rotation and encourages us to look closely at these previously disregarded forms. It is a poignant reminder to look at our own way of using natural resources respectfully with creativity and points towards ROSL's recent renovation of the original gifted wood panels upstairs in the Hall of India & Pakistan.
