ROSL Development projects

ROSL's aim "to give service to the Commonwealth and humanity at large" includes "developing joint welfare projects for disadvantaged communities." ROSL bye laws

Sri Lanka

The development of ROSL joint welfare projects was initiated in 1994. The first project supported eye camps in Sri Lanka in association with the Colombo Eye Bank and the Aziz Foundation. Following an appeal, ROSL members collected around 3,000 spectacles which helped set up two more eye camps in Yatiyantota and Bogawantalawa.

Namibia

In 1995 ROSL, in association with the Ministry of Education, Clara Bohitile and other members of the Namibian government, established a long-term education welfare project in Namibia to provide school bursaries (shoes, clothes, toiletries, pocket money, hostel fees, food, books etc) for young people from very poor communities in remote areas.

Some alumni have become teachers, like Cwisa Cwi, who became the 1st ROSL awardee to become a school principal in the Nyae Nyae Conservany, and Elias Araeb, Ellie Velskoen and Jon Noadeb who are now teaching in the Omaheke region.

In 2010 the project recived a most generous donation from Fondation Espace Afrique. Not only did this boost in funds enable those already in the project to continue their education, but as Fondation Espace Afrique was founded in Africa, by an African and for Africa, this support is a wonderful endorsement of ROSL members’ support over the past 15 years.

Botswana

Funds have been raised to support specific schools near Gaborone in liaison with two ROSL members living in Botswana.

Kenya

In 2012 ROSL will provide educational bursaries in Kenya through the Langalanga Scholarship Fund, a small but effective charity offering secondary scholarships to bright but needy children in the Rift Valley around Gilgil.

The development of these education welfare projects depend upon the individual generosity and support of ROSL members.
